About the Position

The Traffic Control Technician provides safe and efficient movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The position exists to install and maintain roadway traffic control for construction zones under the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), County procedures, and quality standards.
 

Position Qualifications

Education:
  • High school diploma or GED 

Experience:

  • One year of traffic control, traffic operations experience, including installation and maintenance of traffic control devices 
  • One year of road maintenance, construction, or landscaping experience

 Other Requirements: 

  • Must possess or the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record by the time of hire.

  • American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Flagging, Traffic Control Technician, and Traffic Control Supervisor

Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position. 
  • Operates and maintains two-way radio communication and traffic control equipment, i.e., sandbagger, forklift, and skip loader        
  • Responds to and documents all emergency calls received
  • Completes daily written reports and enters information into Cartegraph Asset Management System
  • Sets-up, cleans, and maintains traffic control devices for lane closures, road closures, detours, by-passes, and shoulder work in County work zones following the MCDOT Traffic Control Manual, designed traffic control plans, and the MUTCD
  • Participates in mandatory overtime (on-call and 24-hour standby) for emergency response for regional events and annual Palo Verde exercises
  • Provides flagging for work zones using STOP/SLOW paddle and hand-held radios
  • Performs and documents pre-trip/post-trip inspections on all assigned equipment
  • Inspects barricades, lights, signs, sandbags, and sign spacing daily to ensure proper traffic control set-ups
  • Notifies dispatcher of traffic control set-ups when in process and upon completion and reports any signs that need to be replaced or changed
  • Provides traffic control set-ups for special events throughout Maricopa County as needed
  • Installs and programs message boards and speed monitors at traffic control set-ups
