Arizona is in the midst of deploying Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) under AZTech, a transportation operations and management partnership of public agencies in the greater Phoenix area. AZTech, in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), held a workshop on Thursday, June 8, 2017 to promote the use of ATSPM and exchange knowledge with local agencies. The workshop focused on:
- Providing and operating a centrally maintained ATSPM server for participating jurisdictions, thus eliminating the need for separate installations, which benefits resource-strained transportation agencies.
- Facilitating peer-to-peer training and knowledge exchange to promote the innovative use of ATSPM deployments by other states and local agencies.
The AZTech ATSPM project recently completed a pilot implementation phase, which deployed a central ATSPM server as part of the ITS Regional Archived Data System (RADS). The following seven jurisdictions in the greater Phoenix area participated in this initial deployment: ADOT, MCDOT, the Cities of Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale and Tempe, and the Town of Gilbert.
In addition to the ATSPM system being supported by FHWA and others, an increasing number of companies in the private sector are implementing their own form of ATSPMs and were on hand to discuss their systems in detail. Presentations were made by EDI Systems, Iteris, Live Traffic Data, MioVision, Sensys Networks and Trafficware. Representatives from Utah DOT, Purdue University and the City of Overland Park, Kansas were also present to discuss their experience with ATSPMs.
ITS Arizona would like to acknowledge the generous sponsorship of Clark Transportation Systems, HDR, Kimley-Horn, Lee Engineering and OZ Engineering for providing breakfast, lunch and beverages during the workshop.
