Engineering Division Manager Transportation (Planning and Engineering Division)

The Pima County Transportation Department is seeking an Engineering Division Manager for its Planning and Engineering Division to lead a group of technical professionals responsible for:

  • Traffic studies/analyses
  • Engineering
  • Short and long-range long-range planning
  • Safety
  • Design review, standards, and specifications
  • Site development coordination
  • Capital improvement program (CIP) development and oversight
  • Transportation system management and operations (TSMO), technology and ITS
  • Traffic signals, signing, and pavement markings

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, directs and manages the activities of a division performing engineering work within a Public Works Department;
  • Plans, schedules, assigns and coordinates work in accordance with project schedules to meet department deadlines;
  • Coordinates division activities internally within the department and externally with other departments and outside agencies;
  • Advises department leadership on projects, and develops long-range plans and strategy to meet department goals for time and quality of review;
  • Participates in the development of departmental policies and procedures;
  • Prepares the division budget and participates in the development of the departmental budget;
  • Responds to the more difficult public complaints in area of responsibility;
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and reviews the work of engineering groups in the design and construction of all types of public works projects such as streets, storm drains, sewers, buildings, grading projects, and related structures and improvements;
  • Coordinates planning and design standards with other Public Works departments, and outside governmental agencies;
  • Supervises the environmental requirements and processes to meet state and federal requirements for projects;
  • Represents assigned department at various meetings with other government agencies and the public;
  • Maintains records and prepares and reviews correspondence, reports, and studies.

Engineer I

Pima County Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled and licensed engineer to join our Traffic Safety team. In this position, you will be pivotal in designing, implementing, and evaluating traffic safety measures, contributing to the well-being of our community and the safe and efficient operation of our transportation network. Responsibilities for this position include leading the design, implementation, and evaluation of traffic safety improvements; conducting and overseeing traffic studies; analyzing data and developing recommendations for safety improvements; performing field inspections to assess traffic conditions and ensure adherence to traffic safety regulations; preparing and presenting technical reports, proposals, and documentation for traffic safety initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Participates in designs, studies and cost estimates and prepares reports for future and proposed projects;
  • Analyses of engineering systems to optimize operations;
  • Determines need for basic data, such as field surveys, location of utilities and soil tests and requests information through appropriate channels;
  • Coordinates design and other features of work with other departments and public agencies;
  • Reviews completed work for conformance with original job instructions and accepted engineering practices;
  • Reviews or checks designs, drawings and profiles for adequacy, soundness of engineering features and practicality;
  • Checks and reviews final plans and specifications including contract projects for submission to supervisor;
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of as-built plans or statistical analysis of systems;
  • Performs research, investigative and design work;
  • Manages the construction of public works projects;
  • Provides professional engineering direction and guidance in the construction, maintenance or operation of public works facilities and structures;
  • Performs design review of plans and technical reports for private development for conformance to County standards;
  • Prepares and reviews engineering solicitations, invitations to bid and evaluates submittals;
  • Reviews plans, specifications and analyses prepared under contract and administers contracts;
  • Leads other engineering staff or contractors.

Starting Salary: $73,189.00 – $102,465.00 Annually
