The Street Transportation Department provides for the safe, efficient, and convenient movement of people and goods on city streets, and supports citywide construction projects through the office of the City Engineer.
Sign Specialist II – Street Transportation
The Street Transportation Department is hiring for Sign Specialist II. This position performs skilled tasks in the design and fabrication of signs. Duties include using specialized computers, scanners, software, plotters, silk screening equipment, engravers, and other processes to create standard or customized signs. Types of signs produced include traffic signs and other exterior signs, as well as interior building signs such as directional signs, ADA and life safety signs, banners, and name plates. Types of sign material include aluminum, vinyl, plastic, brass, glass, and wood, among others. Work involves interacting with customers or vendors to discuss needs and to advise on different methods, materials, wording, and size/placement of signs. Incumbents often work independently and exercise discretion and judgment for such tasks as editing graphics, mixing paint or inks, designing signs, fabricating signs, installing signs, and maximizing the capabilities of the sign-making computers, software, and other equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Three years of experience in sign production,
- Including experience with computerized sign making equipment and silk screening.

- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
The City of Phoenix has paused plans to implement a federal mandate requiring all city employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. This decision comes after a series of legal challenges and a ruling from a federal judge which temporarily halts the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal contractors nationwide. If the requirement is reinstated, the City of Phoenix may require new hires to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status as a condition of employment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience with computerized sign making equipment and silk screening.
- Experience operating power tools, laminator, and Vinyl Plotter.
- Experience using modern sign-making technology and software such as Flexi Sign, Gerber Omega, Corel Draw, Photo Shop, Adobe Illustrator.
- Moving objects weighing up to 20 pounds long distances or 50 pounds short distances may be required.

Signing and Striping Shop Trades Helper
The Street Transportation Department currently has vacancies in the Signing and Striping Section of the Traffic Services Division. This section is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all traffic control signs and pavement markings in the City of Phoenix across a street network of over 5,000 miles of public roadways. This function is essential to Traffic Services’ mission to ensure the safety and mobility of people, goods, and services throughout the City of Phoenix.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of experience assisting a skilled trades person or performing manual work which involved the use of an acquired skill
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
