This position is responsible for the efficient operation of traffic signals that are operated and maintained by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). This position interacts directly with local agencies and other ADOT stakeholders to facilitate the effective operation of traffic signals across jurisdictional boundaries. to aid Regional Traffic Engineer in addressing the engineering related tasks and challenges within the boundaries of the Central Region. The staff- member add support to the various TSMO Operational Regions on various traffic studies and transportation engineering reports. This position will also directly supervise other staff within the unit and maintain a standard work flow of tasks related to their work.
Job Duties
- Develop traffic signal phasing and timing plans. This includes data collection and analysis functions using various traffic signal optimization computer based programs, such as Synchro. Plan development will cover various traffic flow conditions, including planned special events as well as plans that may be used as part of an overall Traffic Incident Management plan in an Integrated Corridor Management framework
- Communicate, cooperate, and collaborate with local agencies and other internal ADOT stakeholders in the development and implementation of traffic signal timing plans to facilitate the effective coordination of traffic signal operations across jurisdictional boundaries. This includes development and execution of various Inter-governmental Agreements (as needed).
- Implement traffic signal timing plans and monitor performance. Implementation includes upload of timing plans using a central traffic signal software system(s). Monitoring includes development of performance measures, data collection/analysis, real time monitoring of performance using available CCTV cameras as well as data available from the central software system and other travel time monitoring systems.
- Review and comment on traffic studies and transportation engineering reports, including any related field work to collect information for the TSMO Operational Regions.
- Research and develop traffic signal hardware and software specifications. Prepare various reports, plans, schedules, and project needs statements in support of more efficient traffic signal operations.
- Directly supervise two transportation engineering specialist and provide them with guidance and technical support in their assigned duties. Handle employee concerns and problems, counsels and disciplines staff, and complete employee performance appraisals.
