Tour of the Tempe TMC

On Friday, September 8th, ITS Arizona organized a tour of the Tempe TMC for the ASU ITE Student Chapter. During this tour, the attendees, mostly Master’s and Doctoral students, were introduced to traffic engineering by John Hoang and Julian Dresang of the City of Tempe, who talked about the TMC’s mission, what it does and how it is affected by special events and/or incidents.  In addition to discussing the different systems and resources used by TMC staff, the students also had the opportunity to observe staff remotely monitor and control PTZ cameras and signal timing at several intersections during the course of their visit.  Tempe staff also discussed special event signal timing, how it is used to reduce traffic congestion during ASU home football games and how they work with the Tempe Police Department to provide the best solutions to keep Tempe in Motion.  Thank you to the City of Tempe for providing this valuable opportunity!

Tempe Canal Path Cleanup

On September 9th, ITS Arizona volunteers participated in another successful clean-up of our adopted segment of the Tempe Canal Path. Despite a run-in with some very territorial wasps (ouch!), we were undeterred and collected another impressive amount of trash to keep our path looking great.  We even expanded our area a bit and helped clean up a huge trash pile outside of the path boundary at the request of a local resident.  Also, the streak lives, as we’re 4 for 4 for abandoned shopping carts, which makes the process of getting the collected trash back to the pickup point that much easier.  Thanks to all who attended the clean-up and we encourage everyone to join us when we return in December. It’ll be a lot cooler, we promise!

Thank you to the City of Tempe for providing vests and bags for the cleanup!
